UK Cannabis Legalization: Cannabis Based Products Classed As Medicine!

2017 seems to be the year for cannabis legalization. After the US, UK has moved on with legalization of cannabis. The Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has mentioned that cannabis based ingredient, i.e. cannabidiol is an effecting ‘medicine’ in calming people down. This paves way for legalization of cannabis based products and medical marijuana in the UK.

CBD, or cannabidiol, has been used effectively by patients as young as five years. Jayla Bostock, who has brain damage and suffers from regular seizures was treated with CBD after her mother, Louise, learnt about cannabis.

cannabis based productsAccording to Louise, post cannabis usage, the trips to hospitals have been reduced, but she is frustrated about the fact that authorities keep questioning its legality.

She said, “They try and criminalise it if you even mention cannabis, but when you are dealing with people who are going to die, how can anyone not give it to these people who have no hope?”

Meanwhile, Gerald Heddel, director of inspection and enforcement at the agency, told Sky News: “The change really came about with us offering an opinion that CBD is in fact a medicine, and that opinion was based on the fact that we noted that people were making some quite stark claims about serious diseases that could be treated with CBD.”

cannabis based productsAccording to Heddel, a review showed that people were using this product with the hope that it would work out.

Notably, cannabis has two key components – CBD and THC. Cannabis based products with THC makes you high, psychotic and anxious. However, cannabis based products with CBD can be used for medicinal benefits.  Additionally, when CBD is isolated, it can also calm people down, which is why it is effective as medicine.

Prior to the classification, UK cannabis users were forced to get their supplies online in an unregulated and potentially unsafe market. However, with the decision of MHRA, manufacturers would now need to assure the quality, safety and effectiveness of the products, thereby raising its standards.
