Niagara College To Offer Canada’s First Graduate Cannabis Program

Yes, you read the headline right!

Responding to the growing need for skilled cannabis professionals, the southern Ontario College is all set to produce the first crop of students to earn a certificate in pot education.

Niagara College of Canada is all set to launch Canada’s first postsecondary credential in the production of commercial weed in 2018. Academically titled “Commercial Cannabis Production“, the program has received approval from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills over the summer. It would prepare students to work in the licensed production of marijuana, which is used as a therapeutic drug which includes marijuana, hemp fibre, and hemp seed.

Designed To Meet Growing Labor Needs

According to the media release, it’s a one-year graduate certificate program in Commercial Cannabis Production. In the wake of legislative changes in Canada and abroad, there is a growing labor market need. Education seems the key to achieving success in this emerging industry. Niagara College’s marijuana program is meant to prepare students to work in the licensed production of cannabis.

Dan Patterson, Niagara College president, says that their key strengths lie in their ability to anticipate and respond to emerging industries, trends and people’s need. Their program is a responsive applied learning program to the surprisingly expanding cannabis industry.

The post-grad course will be implemented just in time for Canada’s recently-passed measure to legalize weed countrywide. As of now, the new law will be effective from July 2018 onwards.

Initially, the pot program will be open to 25 candidates. Candidates must have a diploma or degree in agribusiness, agricultural science, environmental science/resource studies, horticulture or natural sciences, or an acceptable combination of education and experience.

The cannabis production is a highly regulated process, with very strict government regulations. Patterson adds that their program will conform to all regulations and requirements. It will also provide a separate and secure learning environment to the students.

The program will be taught at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. It is also home to the College’s other agri-business programs and research projects.  The first intake of the program is scheduled for Fall, 2018.

Program Highlights

  • Design and implement marijuana plant nutrition
  • Access and interpret crop health and quality
  • Comply with all regulatory and requirements for legal cannabis production and packaging
  • Interpret budgets according to the cannabis production
  • Access relevant studies and apply findings wherever necessary

The program will prepare students to work as growers, and managers in production, quality, and operation department.
