His mother passed away at a young age after undergoing chemotherapy. He couldn’t help but wonder, what if there’s an alternative medicine out there that could have saved her? This led him to his journey to the CBD space.

In this episode, Jared shares how he and his best bud Josh Jackson started Best Bud CBD and more about the exciting products that they have in store not only for humans but also for our pets.

I have with me today, the founder, one of the founders and partners of Best Bud which is the premier company for broad-spectrum, gummy bears, tinctures and pet treats. This was really born and you’ll get to hear his story here in just a moment. But this is near and dear to my heart because I interface with people every single day who think a little bit more conservatively for half that stigma cannabis and hemp is still very much a part of their family or a part of their community and they’ve been shy or hesitant to integrate hemp-based products into their family households or even into their personal care regimen. 

When I came across the Best Bud and the yummy got what I call the yummy gummies at the tinctures and the other incredible products that they’re offering for pets right now, I was really super excited to have a tasty, dependable I mean every single time I take one of their products or use one of the products over fear one of the products that consistency and in the reviews is amazing. 

So really excited to hear more about their story. Jared Sawyer is with us today. Again, one of the founding members of Best Bud and the yummy gummies which is my favorite if you can’t tell product Jared, really excited to have you with us over here. I wish you weren’t with us in person. Can you hear me okay?

Jared Sawyer: Yeah, I can hear you just fine. It looks like sounds like you guys are having an awesome time in Vegas. So I’m a little jealous. It’s cold and wet up here in Portland right now. It’s a little bit of a contrast in the desert.

How Best Bud got started?

Sonia Gomez: Well, we are having a good time over here. There’s over 3,000 exhibitors, 50,000 people in attendance somewhere between 40,000-50,000 people in attendance. And I’ll tell you what, when I took your yummy gummies to the top of the Cosmopolitan, 61st floor penthouse party, I got an empty jar back. I was like, okay, you can try one and by the end of it, they had to eat my entire thing. 

So, before we get into the yummy gummies. Why don’t you tell me a little bit about you your background and how Best Bud actually got started?

Jared Sawyer: Little bit about me, I’m an Oregon kid. But I’ve lived all over I lived in Arizona and San Diego for a little bit. And while I was living in Arizona, I was a little bit younger. And not to be a Debbie Downer. But I’ll tell you what kind of got me going down the road of CBD and looking into alternative medicine. 

My mom passed away at 44. So I was age 20 when she passed, and I just remember watching her go through chemotherapy. And having this thought in the back of my mind, I really wish there was something natural that could help her and that kind of really sent me down a different path. 

Always just kind of thinking alternative. Fast forward down the road. and here in Oregon, cannabis is legal CBD was already legal. And my buddy Josh and I were both going through different stresses but very stressful time, about a year and a half, two years ago. 

And then from that, we were just talking and we were like, you know, what’s something that could really help people and a good friend of mine had actually introduced me to CBD. And had told me a lot about CBD. And how it works and how it can help. 

And so from there and Josh and I kind of put our heads together was like, you know what, we need to find a way to get this as many people as we possibly can from that we spawn Best Bud CBD kind of a play on words there were Best Bud and so it just kind of makes sense with that. And then on top of that, you know the Sour Bears aka yummy gummies that you talked about, I mean, we tend to get that response quite a bit from people when it comes to that particular product they can’t keep them in stock in their house, and they can’t keep them on the shelf. 

And so yeah, I’m not too surprised that’s been the reaction to their the cosmo but happy that people they’re enjoying it. And really, really excited that it’s getting good reviews. We wouldn’t expect anything less from that though.

Why THC-Free Products?

Sonia Gomez: That’s amazing. We’ve gotten a really positive response over here and you’re one of the only brands that I carry with me actually when I’m traveling around, and especially the gummy bears because it feels like a little sweet treat to me, but the best thing is is that like it doesn’t make me too tired, it doesn’t make me too subdued. And it’s a product that I can start conversations with that the thing that I love the most is that I can start a conversation with somebody who I see is fatigued in an airport, or perhaps a mom who is feeling overwhelmed and stressed in a grocery store. I’m like slipper a little treat, and they’re so super receptive and so excited about being able to have like, a little everyone’s calling it the yummy gummy. 

My question for you Jared is why did you guys decide to do a broad spectrum or THC-free products? I mean, you’re in Oregon, you guys recognized the trends that are happening with cannabis and I know that that was something that you guys were interested in. But you also are a part of a community professionally, and also personally that’s perhaps a little bit more conservative and didn’t necessarily want to start there. So tell me a little bit about why you guys chose to go with a broad spectrum product versus a full spectrum or an isolated product?

Jared Sawyer: Yeah, no, it’s a great question. As far as cannabis goes, I mean, there’s gonna be that crowd, no matter what state they’re in legally or maybe medically, there will always have a need for and always want it and more power to them. I believe in it completely myself and if that’s something they want, that’s great. 

The mass majority of people and the people that we really focus on aren’t necessarily the people that already know about cannabis, because those people already know what’s going on. They’ll see our product, they’ll know what’s in it. But really, it’s an education piece for us to be able to take broad-spectrum and CBD specifically to the masses. You asked why broad-spectrum versus full or isolette isolettes great taste is really simple in there. It makes a good impact, but you’re not getting all of the value of the CBD from the isolette. 

And a lot of people that are we’re finding and working professionals can’t have any THC in their system for their job or other reasons. And so the broad spectrums, that nice missing piece therebetween isolette and between full spectrum. So that’s why we went with that versus the other ones, we wanted everyone to be able to take these, we didn’t want there to be any THC in them at all so that everyone can enjoy it, and on top of that, they taste like candy. 

And that was really, really important to us when we were going through the products was we wanted our product to be something that can be relatable to people that they already understand what it’s going to taste like. But then also have the added benefits of being there as well. So that’s the cool part about the Sour Bears, aka yummy gummies that you call them. They’re relatable people know what Sour Bears are gonna taste like when they take them and they taste just like that. It is fantastic.

And that’s the whole idea is don’t try to change people’s perception on what they think candy should taste like, is their perception of what candy can do for them and put them in a situation where they’re getting the benefits from CBD while taking something they enjoy.

Best Bud’s Pet Products

Sonia Gomez: Yeah, one of the things I think you guys did well, and probably better than any of the other companies out there that I have tested and tried, and we’ve tested probably 500 products just in the last 18 months, let’s say, and more and more every day people are sending us stuff all the time. And one of the at the end of the day, I come back to your gummy bears and your tincture because I think you guys, I mean, flawlessly executed the art of meeting somebody exactly where they’re at. 

Most of the new consumers are looking which by the way, when it comes to regular cannabis consumption or hemp consumption, where the minority there are more people who have not tried it and are interested in it than there are people who have been using it for a long time and don’t mind the flavors or effects that come from the plant. 

So, you guys flawlessly actually executed putting together a formula and a brand that really effectively captures the attention of a new consumer and really connects with them through the flavor and the quality of your guys’ products. Now, this is not only true for the human demographic I’ve quite literally taken your little steak t bone pet treats to the dog parks. 

And I have been bombarded and in a similar actually, a Great Dane knocked the jar out of my hand. And I’ll tell you the landscape of that dog park look pretty different. About 30 minutes in when everybody started to slow down, sit down, snuggle. It was really really cool to see. Tell me a little bit about your Best Bud pet products.

Jared Sawyer: So both Josh my business partner and I were pet lovers. He has an English bulldog. I have a pug named Frank. And so it was once when I was going through studying in the early genesis. of the business, and I’m learning everything I possibly can learn about the endocannabinoid system and how CBD affects that and how it’s good for you, I actually came across studies that it actually works the same in animals and animals have CBD receptors just like humans do. 

And so we really kind of set out on the mission of Okay, where can we find really good pet treats that don’t taste like crap that these dogs will just go crazy over? And that’s where we came up with Lulu Bites and Frank Treats and you know, they love them. I mean, we would there’s an old saying from a company we used to work for where we eat our own dog food. And it’s kind of the mentality behind the branding that we have our pets take our pet treats, we consume our edibles and our oils and it’s something we live by. So yeah, the pet line has been extremely popular.

We have a lot of people asking about a consistently I have a hard time keeping them stock because Frank kind of goes ballistic for him. Though he’s used to his routine. I’ll take him on a walk. We get back and he’s staring at me like Hey, man, where’s my head? So like, all right, Frank, here you go. And sure enough, 15 minutes later he calms down kind of snuggles up next to us and weirdly enough and this is going to go a direction you probably weren’t expecting so I don’t know if anyone else has pugs out there but it tends to have some noxious fumes because they’re a little bit more flatulent kind of a dog breed and with this CBD [inaudible] you, not Frank has not had that problem at all. 

So for me right then in there that that convinced me when I was giving him CBD of Hey, you know, I’m not noticing as much that he might be kind of lethargic or wanting to take a nap. Which he does calm down quite a bit. But at the same time, though, the smells around the house are a lot better. So take that for what it’s worth.

Sonia Gomez: That’s amazing. I am super excited to have a more in-depth conversation with you and we are going to next week have our full interview an hour-long special on Best Bud, Jared, we’re also going to be speaking with your partner in a separate interview Josh Jackson. And you guys have some pretty extensive knowledge and experience when it comes to connecting directly with your consumer, which for those of you guys who are tuning in, you’re definitely going to want to tune in to our episode next week with Josh and Jared of Best Bud because they’ve been really, really effective free cannabis and hemp in connecting directly with their consumer and creating a culture around their company, and really keeping people hyper-engaged. And we know that marketing and advertising is one of those things that have to be diversified but it’s also a pretty significant challenge in the industry. 

So I’m excited to have that knowledge and wisdom dropped on us. Next week, when we get to have our full-scale interview. We’ll also have a blog that’s written about their entire company sharing their story, and finding out more about how you guys can get connected with the products. Sonia Gomez: One year and three days? No, I’m just kidding give me the 30 seconds quick and dirty. And what they should look forward to in our next interview,

Jared Sawyer: Bringing forward CBD to the mainstream is exactly our focus, our target and our goal for 2020. Being able to have everyday folks that don’t know much about CBD, but know that it’s good for them to find a solution to what they’re already dealing with, whether it be pain, insomnia, stress, anxiety, and being able to bring that to the masses and help them live a better and a richer and a fuller life. That’s really the main focus of 2020. And making sure that people understand that they don’t need to doubt themselves upon opioids. They don’t need to take a crap, tons of Advil feel better. There’s a natural solution to it, and it can taste really, really good.

Sonia Gomez: I’m really excited to share more about your story. I think that there’s so much value that you have to bring to the business community and I for those people who have not had a chance to meet you guys yet, I know that you’re in your first year of business with Best Bud and you guys are already doing incredible leaps and strides. With the videos that you guys are making in the way that you’re telling your story is, I mean, for me, it’s very, very moving, it creates a very human connection, which I think a lot of brands and businesses are lacking right now. So this is certainly the company to watch you guys and definitely check them out on their channels.

I’m a mother of four and this is the daily fixture in our household and likewise for businesses that are looking to integrate CBD into their retail locations or online e-commerce stores.

I mean, the majority of the wig big wigs and who’s who of the industry, where they’re celebrating a few of their companies going public. 

We definitely had a pass around there and then also at the VIP Cosmo penthouse parties with the genetics for having one of the largest suppliers of genetics for the hemp industry right now, but it is up there and that’s where you guys got it up in and they ate them all.
