4 Things that Can Elicit a False Positive Drug Test

Cannabis is the reason behind thousands of debates and discussions in the world today. Some say it is a wonder crop that has a solution for every life problem. For some people a gateway drug will push people towards abuse of harder drugs like cocaine or LSD. While this may hold true in some scenarios, it’s not the same everywhere.

Schools, hospitals, offices have now started taking drug tests before admission or at random intervals. These drug tests are used to determine presence of the following components in the system: Amphetamines/methamphetamine, Cocaine, Marijuana/THC/Cannabinoids, Opiates/Heroin, and Phencyclidine (PCP). Sometimes false positive drug test results are shown in patients taking certain medications.

#1: Cold and Flu Medication

Most over the counter cold and flu medicines contain a synthetic amphetamine called Pseudoephedrine. This alleviates the symptoms of sinus congestion by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal tract. While this does relieve some symptoms of cold, it may test positive in a drug test.

#2: Selegiline and Vicks Inhaler

Selegiline is used to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease. Since it does not have anti-Parkinson properties it is administered with levodopa/carbidopa. Vicks inhalers provide relief from blocked nose and cold symptoms. Nevertheless both these medications show false positive drug test results for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine.

This drug is used to treat joint pains and reduce inflammations. Sometimes they are sold as Daypro, Dayrun or Duraprox. These non-steroidal drugs lower the level of prostaglandins thus providing relief to the patient. The problem with this medicine is it can show a false positive drug testresult for Benzodiazepine. This drug is said to sometimes show a 100% false positive result.

#4: Fluoroquinolone

Fluoroquinolone is a popular class of antibiotic that is used to treat various forms of infections. Some common drugs of this particular class include gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin. Inspite of the recent developments in this drug, it may still show a false positive drug test result for opiates. Levofloxacin is most likely to show false results.

Therefore it can said that its best to give notice to the concerned test authorities about any medication you may be taking before taking part in the drug test.
