The world runs on the principle of ‘Unity in Diversity’. When it comes to cannabis, this holds true only in some instances. People still have variegated and overlapping opinions about this herb. To some cannabis is a wonder herb that can be a solution to any issue under the sun. For some, cannabis is a gateway drug that will eventually ruin your life. Inspite of the differences, the cannabis culture is expanding and spreading across the latitudes and longitudes pretty fast.
Doctors and physicians are now using cannabis strains to treat patients suffering from diseases like sickle cell anemia, heart diseases, and gastrointestinal disorders, glaucoma, diabetes, cancer, AIDS, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and many more. They are administering cannabis for newer and more complicated diseases where modern day allopathy has failed. Cannabis for Psoriasis is a rather new approach in the herb’s therapeutic application.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a type of autoimmune disease which is characterized by patches of abnormal and improper skin. The skin patches are generally red, scaly and itchy. The severity may vary from small and localized to full body coverage. Injury to skin cells can generate psoriatic skin changes at that position. This is known as Koebner phenomenon.
There are five main types of Psoriasis, namely plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic. This genetic disease has symptoms like cracked dry skin which may bleed; burning and itchiness, red patchy skin covered in thick silvery scales, swollen joints and thick and ridged nails.
There are many pharmaceutical and chemical treatments for this disease but sometimes the medications may have side effects. Sometimes the medications don’t work. In this instance, cannabis for Psoriasis is a rather new treatment approach.
Cannabis and Psoriasis
Cannabis has two main compounds in it namely cannabidiol (CBD) and THC. THC is responsible for the psychoactive and relaxing effects on the body. CBD has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiemetic, anti-diarrhea and anti-oxidant properties in it. These two compounds help in reducing the symptoms of Psoriasis.
The human body has its own endocannabinoid system (ECS). They are present all over the body. The ECS also exists in the dermis of the human skin. It helps in stabilizing and balancing biological processes like proliferation, growth, differentiation, apoptosis and cytokine. There are two main ECS receptors namely CB1 and CB2. These are found in the brain, nervous system and immune system. Since psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, cannabinoid engages these receptors in the immune system and helps in alleviating the symptoms.
