What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson's disease is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) that mainly affects the motor system of the human body. The symptoms are slow to occur and increase with age. Some common symptoms are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking. Thinking and behavioral problems may also occur. With time depression, dementia and anxiety set in.
Doctors prescribe exercise and caffeine to patients at their early stage of the disease. There is no actual cure for the disease, so physicians just prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications.
Cannabis and Parkinson’s disease
Cannabis contains a compound called Cannabidiol. This compound engages the endocannabinoid system of the human body. This particular compound has anxiolytic, antidepressant, antipsychotic, sedative, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Since Parkinson’s disease is caused by a progressive loss of neurons in the brain, CBD plays a major role in counteracting the problem.
Scientists conducted a research where 21 patients were subjected to 75mg/day CBD, 300mg/day CBD and placebo. The results showed that the patients given 300mg/day CBD had marked improvement in their health. The CBD relieved their motor symptoms and sleep disturbances.
More recent research papers show the same result when conducted with CBD.
It can be seen that cannabidiols can play a major role in reducing and diminishing the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease if taken in right proportions.
