Everybody’s been there. That moment you realize you’ve consumed too much cannabis. Yes, there is such a thing. So much so that weed related emergency room visits are even on the rise.

Whether you’re a seasoned sensei smoker or new to the cannabis scene, getting too high can be an extremely uncomfortable feeling. Never mind that you know it will eventually pass. In the moment, it sure doesn’t feel like it.

Panic and paranoia are real side effects of consuming too much cannabis. Whether the edible was stronger than you anticipated, or you just tried dabs for the first time, being too high can make you rethink cannabis consumption entirely.

There are ways however, to counteract the effects of getting too high. The next time you partake in too much pot, keep the following tips in mind to mellow your mood and ride the wave with ease.

7 Tips to Get Over Getting Too High

1. Breathe

Panicking after consuming too much cannabis is more common than you might think. One of the best things you can do to settle your mind is focus on your breath. Find a quiet, comfortable place where you can take the time to forget the million thoughts in your mind by practicing some deep breathing exercises.

Take deep, full breaths (inhaling for a slow count of six) in through the nose and long, full breaths (exhaling for a slow count of eight) out through the mouth. Do this for ten full breath cycles, and you should find yourself start to relax. Practice these rounds of ten full breaths until you feel at ease.

2. Stay Hydrated

Ensuring you stay hydrated is an excellent way to ward off the sensation of being too high. Drinking water, juice, or herbal tea (just be sure to avoid caffeine) can help when things get too crazy after too much cannabis consumption. Some herbal teas such as chamomile are known for their calming effects, which can help considerably when your high is making you anything but calm.

3. Smell Some Pepper

Black peppercorns have been a household remedy for paranoia and anxiety for years. Chewing on black peppercorns can significantly reduce THC-induced tension. If chewing pepper is too much, you can also try inhaling their scent to find the relief you need.

4. Find Something to Distract Yourself

This isn’t always easy when you’re hit with pot-induced paranoia. But finding something to distract yourself can be a lifesaver when you’ve gotten too high. Put on a funny movie, play your favorite songs, or watch a funny video on YouTube. You might try an adult coloring book (which is also something awesome to do when high, but not too high). Basically, just find something to do that makes you feel good rather than focusing on the racing thoughts and feelings you’re experiencing.

5. Get Outside and Get Some Exercise

Feeling crazy inside after consuming too much THC? Getting outside and breathing in some fresh air can do wonders. Go for a walk on the beach, take a hike, or take a jog down to your local park. Getting out and getting moving can help tremendously when you need to come down from consuming too much cannabis.

6. Take a Warm Bath or Shower

Now this obviously isn’t always going to work, but if you’re at home (or at a good friend’s house) taking a warm shower or bath can help. Warm water is one of the most soothing ways to relax and counteract feeling too high.

7. Try Some CBD

If you’ve got access to CBD, it is one of the best things to counteract a too-intense THC high. CBD has not only been shown to reduce anxiety, but also protects against adverse psychological effects of THC.
