Cigarette smokers looking to kick the habit may want to look into cannabidiol (CBD) to help with their efforts. As anyone who has ever tried to quit smoking cigarettes well knows, it’s not always easy. Even though smoking is the leading cause of preventable death (and can lead to all kinds of health problems), over one billion people around the world continue to light up every single day. Using CBD for cigarette addiction however, could change this.

CBD for Cigarette Addiction Study Shows Significant Promise for Those Who Want to Quit Smoking for Good

While there are several studies that show how CBD helps treats addiction, a 2016 study conducted by researchers at the University College London was the first to study CBD specifically for cigarette addiction. They found that CBD could significantly increase a person’s chances of kicking the habit for good.

The randomized double-blind placebo study was used to assess the influence CBD could have on smokers who wished to quit. There were 24 people in the study, 12 of whom received an inhaler (vaporizer) of CBD, and 12 of whom received a placebo.

Over a one-week treatment period, the placebo smokers showed no decrease in cigarette consumption. CBD smokers however, significantly reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked. The people who took CBD reduced their cigarette intake by 40 percent. Results were published in an article in the journal Addictive Behaviors in May 2016.

It’s believed CBD for cigarette addiction helps curb the desire to smoke by the way it influences memories (or cues) that contain the desire and urge to smoke. Basically, CBD helps to gradually erase the memories associated with smoking.

According to Dr. Celia Morgan, co-author of the study, “CBD seems to reduce the salience of cues. It can also reduce anxiety and may affect a memory process called ‘reconsolidation,’ which is where when a memory of the reward of smoking is re-activated by seeing someone else smoking, it is rendered vulnerable to destruction.”

Authors of the study also noted that another explanation could be based upon the effects CBD has on the natural endocannabinoid system in a person’s body. For one, CBD serves as an inhibitor of the enzymes that break down anandamide. This neurotransmitter plays a huge role in depression, pain, memory, appetite, and fertility. CBD also positively influences CB1 receptors.  Both of these actions are believed to possibly reduce the boosting properties nicotine contains.

CBD for Cigarette Addiction: Natural Relief for Smoking Cessation

There are things that can help a person quit smoking.  Many are simply nicotine replacement therapies though. They can help a person quit “smoking”, but often just replace one source of nicotine for another. And while vaping CBD oil is still considered smoking, vaping temperatures are significantly lower than conventional smoking methods. CBD also contains countless health benefits no matter what method of consumption.

According to Morgan, “This (40%) was more than expected. However, it is difficult to compare to other smoking cessation therapies as we did not ask people to stop smoking, simply to try using the inhaler when they wanted a cigarette.”

This preliminarily study shows promise. The authors state that larger studies are needed to back up what they’ve discovered.  Morgan says it’s difficult to compare her results to those of other studies regarding CBD for cigarette addiction…because there really just aren’t any.

While more research is undoubtedly needed, this groundbreaking study confirms that countless people trying to quit smoking could finally do so with the help of CBD.
